While arts such as Karate and Muay Thai focus on strikes and blocks while upright, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created for the place most fights will end up – on the ground. At some point, unless the fight is over very quickly, you and your assailant will likely end up on the ground grappling with each other.
Like some other arts, such as Judo, Jiu-Jitsu will train you to defeat stronger, heavier opponents in these ground-fighting situations through the proper application of joint locks and choke holds. Not just lip service, Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most practical arts for smaller, weaker combatants to learn, and can be not only an equalizer, but even create an advantage for the better trained individual in teaching you how to take the fight to the ground, end up on top, and then use that position to quickly and decisively defeat your assailant, regardless of any size or strength advantage they may have.
In addition, the joint locks and holds learned in Jiu-Jitsu can be excellent for larger, stronger fighters who, when confronted with a self-defense situation, may be reluctant to use the excessive force taught in Karate and Muay Thai for fear of being held legally liable for injury to the assailant. With Jiu-Jitsu, you will learn how to place your assailant in various submission holds, neutralizing them until they calm down or law enforcement arrives, without fear of doing them any kind of severe harm for which you, as the trained fighter, may be held accountable.
