The newest of the martial arts taught at ToppPerformance, Judo originated in Japan about 150 years ago. It focuses primarily on using leverage and technique to throw your opponent to the ground; in the case of Judo as a sport, simply to win points, however the exact same techniques can be delivered with sufficient force to disable an assailant in a self-defense situation.
Virtually all techniques in this art begin with grappling with the opponent in order to gain a hold which will result in a throw. There are no striking techniques in Judo, nor are pressure points used to facilitate throws. Technique is paramount. Primarily a sport, this art is a challenging physical endeavor that will result in exceptional improvements in physical condition, balance, and coordination for those who apply themselves.
Derived from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, this art focuses on sports-oriented sweeps, throws and ground grappling. With successful training and practice, you'll be amazed at the ease with which you can grapple with and throw a much larger and stronger opponent. Popular at the Olympics, the study of this art is rewarding, challenging and fun.
If, however, your goal is to learn an art for the purpose of self-defense, one or more of the other three arts taught at ToppPerformance would be a better choice. Check out our Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, and Muay Thai pages.
